Originally posted by reh321 I don't see anything, even in the first photo, that would be eliminated because of "beautification" {nor would I want it to}; I like it - all the signage, etc contributes to the local ambiance
Both of the photos are from Ireland so they are unaffected by the beautification program sponsored or advocated my Mrs. Johnson. The first photo is an urban setting, and therefore even if that city were in the USA it would not be impacted by the roadside beautification program. But I remember what roads were like in the 150's & 60's, with huge ugly billboards and even uglier local signage, and vast stretches of monotonous mown grass. The removal of the billboards*, local signs, and the planting of native wildflowers along major highways has really made the roads in this country vastly more pleasant to drive.
"I think that I shall never see,
A billboard lovely as a tree.
Indeed unless the billboards fall
I'll never see a tree at all."
Ogden Nash's doggerel that reflects public awareness of how advertising was blighting America The (not so) Beautiful.
