A street corner in Prague. The pattern of white pavers indicates pedestrians only in most of this area.

Somehow this image, for me, is evocative of many small communities in the shadow of a much larger city.

This looks like most of the places I lived for the first 42 years of my life. In fact, I ran a men’s clothing store in a vibrant little downtown in Seymour, Indiana for 10 years. Then a Wal-Mart Super Store came to town. And you can guess the rest of that story.

USS New Jersey

Most decorated Battleship in the US Navy. Launched from the Philadelphia Shipyard in December, 1942, the New Jersey became the most decorated ship in history and served as Admiral Halsey's flagship (among other admirals) during WWII. It went on to be retrofitted several times and served in Korea, Viet Nam and the Middle East. Ultimately retired in 1991, it is now a museum docked at Camden Seaport facing the city that launched her almost 80 years ago.

In the background is the Walt Whitman Bridge; in the foreground is the water taxi connecting the 2 waterfronts.

Can't help but notice in the background across the river the stacks of the fastest if not the fastest North Atlantic Ocean Liners ever built the "SS United States".
It's my understanding the ship over the years, after many attempts to preserve it, has deteriorated to the point it may be cost prohibitive to restore it as a museum piece and may end up being towed away and scrapped.

You are 100% correct...the SS United States was the last of the luxury liners and you can see its smokestacks in the right corner. There is a grass roots effort being made to preserve her, but it appears trans-oceanic nostalgia is gone as very few people alive remember such cruises....Those memories are in celluloid now, but the "bones" of that ship are sturdy.

Not quite a street as motorized vehicles are prohibited. It's a RR RoW converted to a walking/biking trail by paving about 25 miles of it. It even has interrupted yellow stripes down the center to keep opposite-direction traffic to one side. although in practice the stripes are ignored.

i would gladly travel that way to europe rather than fly. that ship is large for the nostalgia operational treatment but she deserves to be restored . i am trying to justify the cost of touring egypt via the boat agatha christie was on when she wrote death on the nile . its very luxurious a la the orient express...priced that way too. there is one trip a year where everyone does full on period costumes....

If you want to cross the Atlantic on an Ocean Liner you can still do it. The Queen May II is also classed as an Ocean Liner, not a Cruise Ship exclusively, as it has regularly scheduled year round crossings of the North Atlantic from New York to Southampton and return

The trouble with cruise ships = you are totally captive consumer. If they offer reasonably priced meals, fine. If they want $8 for a glass of soda and offer nothing but gourmet $30 hamburgers for lunch. what will you do?
