No way I can count how many times I've driven across that bridge. FYI for any unaware. 1) maximum of 14 lanes of traffic when all are operating; 2) over 135,000 vehicles daily*; 3) a bit over 49 million cars in 2013, probably has exceeded 50 million some years since then, which makes the GWB the busiest bridge in the world. Some place has to hold such records.

*Update: the figure of 135,000 vehicles daily was old. Currently the GWB carries about 300,000 vehicles per day, and over 100 million per year.

But FYI, in terms of number of people crossing a bridge, the Howrah Bridge in Kolkata, West Bengal carries only 150,000 vehicles daily, but also a mind-bending 4,000,000 pedestrians cross it daily (yes, that is four million per day).

Not exactly a rest area - it's a nearly-deserted "parking area" along I-10 in New Mexico. No services, restrooms or picnic tables, although I saw a few trash cans.

Oh yeah. There are lots of those, all over the country. In some states that is all they have, I guess because owning and maintaining full service rest areas is too costly.

What about long-drop dunnies, like along the major Australian highways. The minor highways, and remote ones have 'find a tree' dunnies.

One of about 1,000 names for a pit-toilet, as is "long drop." These are extremely rare to non-existent as relief spots constructed by state or municipal governments. There are sanitary, ground & surface water protection laws that forbid them at many locations, there is the potential political blow back from offering citizens such "primitive" facilities, but the real problem is cleaning and maintenance. They are potentially more problem and expense to keep health-code clean than a flush toilet.

They're actually pretty common along remote state highways in the western states. I've used a few in Arizona, Nevada, and eastern Oregon. They're a good solution when there's no running water within a hundred miles. They're very drafty in the winter... and the draft is always coming up from the pit.
