An unpaved road with a lot of water, I would have expected to feel the car slewing sideways now and then, but no such thing. It was the right vehicle and an experienced driver, so everything was smooth as silk (more-or-less - - not like fresh blacktop)

You never know what you'll encounter along a road in Africa, but I'll take a troupe of baboons over some of the monkeys encountered on roads in MessyChewBits.

That's impressive. We have some unpaved clay roads over here and they become inpassable really quickly with a bit of rain. Beware of oncoming traffic! Nice scene.

Ballsed the focus a little but happy with the result nonetheless.

My father grew up in Maine in the early 1900's, a small town somewhat interior to the coast. He remembers the Spring "mud time" when roads were impassible so schools were closed sometimes for several weeks. We take paved paved roads so much for granted, but in many rural areas they are a post WWII innovation. Even here in relatively well-developed MessyChewBits there are significant roads in the western part of the Commonwealth that have never been paved

The Apache Trail

Winding along the Salt River, The Apache Trail (AZ-88) was built in 1904 to provide access for the construction of Roosevelt Dam. Beginning in Apache Junction, the road climbs to Canyon Lake, then turns east to Tortilla Flat and climbs through the rugged terrain of Tonto NF before reaching its terminus at the base of the dam. (Cross-posted in Monochrome Landscape).

Incredible capture! One of the very first things I did after moving here was drive the Apache Trail. I didn't even realize you could access the area across the Salt River from the road, though. Looking at the map now, you must've crossed on the bridge past the dam and hiked from 188?

Yep! The Vineyard Trail starts from the north side of the bridge and climbs up to the ridge line where you get amazing views of the lake, dam, river and eventually Four Peaks as you get a couple miles in. Initial climb from the lake is steep, but totally worth it. And not crowded at all - I did it with a buddy this past Saturday and we only saw two other hikers on our 8-mile hike.
