FYI: Some quicky facts about the Aran Islands
There is stone fort called
Dún Aonghasa that was built about 1100BC. It stands against a terrifying cliff that drops into the sea.
A stone church was built in 490.
The soil is thin to non-existent. People hauled up seaweed onto the rocks and let it rot to create soil.
One castle was built there, but Cromwell's men destroyed it and almost all of the churches.
In the 1800's the population was around 8300.
Today there are about 1200 people living on the islands.
There is a very pleasant hotel for tourists.
