When P.T. Barnum was running his traveling shows/circuses, sometimes the long midway of carnival booths would become so clogged with throngs of guests that he needed a way to clear some of them out, so that more people could buy tickets and come into the show grounds. His solution was hanging a bright sparkly banner over a gateway reading "This Way To The Great Egress," and those people filing through found themselves outside.

Interstate 40, about halfway between Little Rock and Memphis.

Pay attention, give plenty of room around you, and don't be fiddling with a Stoopit Phon while you drive.

Same wreck on I40.

Everyone was stopping for the wreck where the new trucks tried to load themselves in the back of another truck.

And bam!

The driver of the Tahoe plowed into a bunch of bikes.

Killed one.

All because he was in too much of a hurry to follow some simple rules about driving.

Drive at a speed that the conditions demand.

Give plenty of room for yourself, and for all the morons on the road.

Eyes on the road. All the time. Watch traffic and be ready when things get crazy.

I drove nearly 800,000 miles in 5 years in a big truck. I saw a lot of roads like this, and fortunately was never caught up in the carnage.

And I saw some weather.

This was on US 212, on the Crow Indian Reservation.

Hi Racer. I don't know if you get Highway Through Hell about wreckers working the Coquihalla highway here in BC, but you sure get to see what happens when stupid drivers meet adverse weather.

Anyway, here is a street view of a freeway in St. Petersburg - no not Florida! (On a tour bus, so not the best photo.) It's interesting how much of the freeway would be lit at night. Belgium has the best example of this - all of their freeways are lit, and apparently can be seen from space!

I know about the Coquihalla. One of many difficult roads in Canada. Never drove it though.

When I was still driving for a living I saw plenty.

Like this:

And this next one. There isn't enough snow on the road to make things dodgy, yet this driver managed to wind up stuck in the median.

What a maroon.

It was beautiful with a clearing storm yesterday morning but I didn't have much time to go somewhere more scenic so I just took a little detour on my ride to work.

Oh, here's one more from the previous day while it was raining. Taken from the office roof. That's US Hwy 50 with the log truck.
