Here's a road in the Mojave with no residents anymore, just two ghost towns. It's not all that long, though. The government considered using this area for nuclear bomb testing in the 1940's.

Beautiful picture. The county where I live is enormous, almost 10,000 square miles (bigger than some states), and the population is nearing 5 million now. But, once you leave town, you're out in the wilderness. It really threw me off, moving here from the east coast, where there aren't really any empty spaces. Some places have fewer people, but you'll always find a house or two here and there. It's nice to still be able to get on my bike and ride out to the canal paths on the edge of things to get my "wide open space" fix.
