is there a snowless winter in the Netherlands? It seems that even 100 years ago the canals were freezing and ice skating was a favorite pastime of the Dutch... I read somewhere that it was the Dutch who invented skates...
I remembered Bruegel's paintings - The Hunters in the Snow and Winter Landscape with (Skaters and) a Bird Trap

Very much so. We mostly get a few weeks of snow over here and last winter we could go skating for about a week. This winter we could go skating for just one day, but there's a good
chance that we'll be able to skate somewhere in January or February which are normally the coldest months. Climate change, however, has reduced the odds of that.... I think that these paintings were done when there was what is called little ice age.

There was a period during which the Thames River as it passed through London froze solid every winter, reliably enough that an annual "Frost Fair" was held out on the ice.

The last time the Thames froze enough for skating was January, 1963,, the coldest winter in 200 years.

Nice, thanks for that info. (we're at + 14 celsius right now). 1963 is when the toughest Elfstedentocht (eleven cities skating tour) ever was held, so that makes sense.

You are positively correct. However, the area finally received some much needed rain over the past couple weeks. I'll be heading out there soon to take a look.

I remember reading about some snow over there. Hope this works out for nature.

Thanks HoutHans. It is on the main road from Windhoek to South Africa. You actually sometime see some traffic as well. As well as cleverly hidden traffic cops, but this was taken during Covid lock downs etc, so nice and quiet
