I figured keeping it simple was key. That guy also needed some air, so he wound up relocated.

EDIT: I basically worked the wires out, and cut/pasted the guy elsewhere before running it through Simplify. I set the detail masking fairly aggressively to get rid of some of the dust bunnies in the original.

EDIT II: Looks like I lopped off one of the guys fingers! Ah, well...

Nice challenge, Tim!

I first opened in this in Lightroom, adjusted the White Balance to Cloudy. Then I applied an onOne Glow - Soft and Muted filter.
Then I transferred the image to PSP X4 where I cloned out a few remaining specks in the upper left (which I suspect was later cropped out); cropped the image and then used the Buttonize 3-D effect.

I'll be interested in seeing where others take this.

Here is my attempt. I don't really remember everything that I did to the image, but here is a rundown of what I do remember.
Lightroom

• Crop to 4:3 to get rid of most of the power lines
• Attempted to clone out all the little black dots, I'm sure I missed a few of them
• Added some blue into the sky
• Increased the sharpening just a little bit
• Saturated the colors to give them some more "pop"
• Exported a full resolution TIFF

Paint.NET

• Applied an Auto Levels correction to mute the colors and give it a bit of retro look
• Cloned out the remaining power lines
• Resized to web resolution (1024x768)
• Exported the final JPEG

I cropped, cloned out spots and adjusted WB in Aperture. I then tried several plug-ins looking for something grungy. I ended up using Snapseed. I wanted detail in the boarder and lots of structure in the overall image. This is essentially the grunge filter which I played with until a colour caught my eye. A blur vignette was then added.

straightened, cropped, 'sunny landscape' script in gimp, slight adjustments to rider to correct effects from script, slight selective NR, slight selective sharpening... was going to move rider into the air, but decided to leave it alone since Sagitta already covered that one..

My attempt with this fun image.
I thought I would see how Sagelight worked and compared to other editing programs I have. I had to convert to a Tiff for Sagelight, where I cloned out some spots and lines, adjusted color, tone and contrast.
Next was Lightroom 4 to get rid of some of the noise and to crop and straighten. (Found that Sagelight and LR4 did not work well together, on my system, and had to put Sagelight on an external drive)
Then went on to Corel paintshop pro 4 and added a black pencil effect.
Resized and added a border with Irfanview.
