Challenge 89

Welcome one and all to the Post Processing Challenge #89!

Many thanks, Jmschrei, for hosting last weeks challenge.

The baton is passed to me this week and I chose a Spring pic for you to play with.

I had my 55-300mm and the sturdy K5, as I trekked up and down the river channel on this warm evening. For this shot I was crouched on a tuft of grass, down a steep muddy bank, wishing I had a wider lens and something dry to lean on.

This challenge will run until 11:59 PM CST, February 13th, 2013

The winner of this challenge becomes the host of the next one. Don't forget to have fun and I do look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with! Please, feel free to share your editing process, hints or ideas.

Information for the next host:

The media fire website is: mediafire.com

The log in name is: pentaxchallenge @ yahoo.com

The password is: postprocessing

Good luck to everyone.

I'll start this off with yet another quickie. No time for details right now, but I'll edit them in when possible.

EDIT:
I did some minor work in Lightroom like brightness and saturation adjustments but most of the PP took place in Paint.NET.
In Paint.NET I wanted to change the image so that it would look as if it was taken during sunset on a cool autumn day. To do so I tried various filters and level adjustments and swapping RGB channels and blah, blah, blah... Nothing really seemed to work out as I had planned. So I turned to one of my favorite plug-ins for Paint.NET, Color Match by pyrochild. What the plug-in did was take a separate image and overlay it's color values over chemtech's original image, giving me the effect I desired. From there I tweaked saturation and brightness once more, added some very fine and smooth grain and finally the black border.

In the end I got the effect I wanted. I hope you all like it.

IR Black and White conversion, highlighted the ripples for effect, and some flare at the side.

A little bit of histogram adjust, tone mapping, and curves.

If you don't mind me asking, what programs did you guys use?

Recently, I've been going back to my old, Jasc Paint shop pro 7, to learn and relearn some basics. Ever heard of it?

As I stated in my first post I use Paint.NET. The plug-in I used has to be downloaded separately, I don't have the link for that but if anyone wants it send me a PM and I'll send it to you.

I just upgraded to PSP X4 from PSP X. I could still work with PSP X except it doesn't handle the Raw files from my recently acquired K-r.

Thanks, J. Stanz! I really like the effect you ended up with. I researched the Pyrochild plugin (for Paint.NET only). I also found a site where you could download all the most recent plugins, for a Very modest sum. Free and/or inexpensive PP Software is a real temptation for me.

Thanks, for the info, Tim!
I have almost quit using my Jasc program, which I love, because it stripped the Exif data. The Corel PSPX4 is very close to my old Jasc, but, just different enough to cause me confusion.

Edith
p.s. I think I detected some great "Layer" usage in your edit.

Crop, some cloning and curve adjustments in Aperture. Converted to B&W with Silver Efex, starting with a sepia preset then local adjustments to brightness and structure.

Just converted to BW, added two gradient filters and crop the image.
