I bet it makes it harder to split for fire wood!

I was also thinking about that. Cannot see how this wood could be used for a split-rail fence. It would look - - screwy.

Cottonwoods wouldn't do that here. I have one about 80 feet from where I'm sitting and there are only a few other large ones near here. If we have a sustained wet spring, we might get a fair number of little cottonwood seedlings in places were the seeds landed in mud, but few turn into trees, or even bushes. Even in floodplains of streams we don't have more cottonwoods than we have other native lowland trees. Small creeks would be more likely to be choked (and only in places) with black willow or cattails. You must be blessed with a level of constant soil moisture and humidity that cottonwoods love! Lucky you!

Cottonwood trees are really more like a virus. Nearly impossible to kill. A torn bit of leaf will grow a new tree. When removing them, you can't chip them up like other trees and use the remains as mulch. The chipped up bits of the cambium and leaves will grow thousands of new trees. Spread the chips as mulch and have a cottonwood tree carpet rather than flowerbeds or garden.

Such a perfect survival strategy the tree has evolved.

The bane of my existence on the riverbank.

Someday I shall vanquish the evil cottonwood.

Yeah, that's it.

Blessed.

About the only thing I don't care for regarding the Pacific Northwet is the nearly year 'round high moisture levels.

In the background of this photo most of the trees are cottonwood.

I thought the expanses of trembling aspens, especially in autumn, were so popular in the mountainous West? The aspen is merely the cottonwood's smaller cousin. One is Populus deltoides and the other, Populus tremuloides, if I remember clearly. Here, we also have the Big-toothed Aspen, but I've totally forgotten the Latin for that one.

I suspect that's a cottonwood in its Autumnal splendor raising it's crown in the gully.

A tree from this morning's walk. Looks like the seed sprouted on ground that was ultimately too wet and soft.

This image was taken from a track that encircles the You've-A-Nursery football stadium, looking toward a small limited access highway. Between there is a small drainage where this line of trees remains unmolested by humans.
