The gypsum sand here is pretty harsh for plants.

The B&W is especially nice. SUGGESTION: Experiment bringing up the highlights a bit more, or increasing the contrast a bit, to get some bright whites here and there. Not sure it would be better, as it would/could spoil the mood of the image.

This tree is not struggling with gypsum around its roots, but has been fighting very dry-hot conditions, and lost.
