Detail of hemlock with a dusting of that stuff. Snow is like people, and many other things: in small quantities it's tolerable, even pretty, but when it exceeds a certain quantity........

Judging by their leaves and fruit clusters, it looks like the Sumacs really love that burned-over habitat! Perhaps some trees died, but the place is hardly devoid of thriving vegetation.

Those prairie fires burn through pretty quickly, but apparently are hot enough to burst the xylem cells at the base of the tree trunks. Yes, I assume the sumacs regenerated from seeds.
