I expect that Missouri cedar is an Eastern Red Ceder (Juniperus virginiana). <
Plants Profile for Juniperus virginiana (eastern redcedar) >
It is the only conifer indigenous to every county in Illinois, as well. There are few native white pines in a little area of northern Illinois. And another kind of pine (red, long-leaf, short-leaf...I forget) as well as bald cypresses in far southern Illinois. In any other part of the state, when you see a conifer, if it ain't a red cedar, people planted it there.
Got hundreds of them growing on our little 40 acres. We cut branches for our goats to eat. Makes their mouths smell like cedar chests.
