The fallen tree has probably been hung-up for a long time to develop that curve.

addendum to the one about my fondness for black walnut trees: there's a reason the ol' folks called 'em "widow makers". I was picking up a cup of tea off off of a steel "pic-nic" table when I started to hear a creaking sound that got louder quickly - I was running before the "crash". Had no idea which tree was making the noise, and I was right under one, next to that table. Lost all my tea, of course (keeping track of high priorities, you know).

I usually think of a widow maker as being any big branch, from any tree species that comes down suddenly, especially ones that have already broken off and are barely suspended in other branches waiting for a strong enough gust to set them free. A good reason to refrain from woodland walks on a windy day.
