From this photo, you'd never guess this was taken from a hotel parking lot, with a freeway overpass and onramp in the background...

Now that is an unusual tree, Noel. Any idea what it is?

I'm afraid not! Not listed in my book of indigenous trees, so probably an exotic. This is in Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, that as a combination of indigenou and exotic trees. I'll try to find out.

Either of them can try if they wish. On that experiment I will pass.

Some trees in reflection. I think these pale-barked trees are beeches.

Snapped! We have seen so many big trees either snapped or felled down to their roots over the past 18 months. As I mentioned before, it seems that many trees that started as saplings after the great windfall of the '38 hurricane have now reached the limit of their growth and and too tall for their structural integrity.

OK, just one branch of Sabinea carinalis, "Carib wood", a spectacular small flowering tree. Native to the island of Dominica. It goes totally dormant for a few months in the winter (dry season), then explodes into flower. Unfortunately the flowers are short-lived, a stiff breeze will knock many of them off the branch, but while it's blooming, the tree looks like a red dome.
