Local tree wearing its autumnal colors. From several years ago. Only scattered signs of color so far this year.

Avenue of Beech Trees, Wye Forest, South Wales

This obviously planted avenue is in the middle of a forest, away from any habitation or likely habitation in the past. It is a puzzle why it is here.

Base of a tree that is standing but doomed as the peeling bark probably means it is dead. The softer wood of the roots will probably give way first and the entire tree will topple, although sometimes woodpecker holes higher up introduce fungi and mold and a tree will snap well above its base.

This beautiful oak is far older than the reservoir that fills a valley just ahead. It was enclosed into the state-controlled land around the new water supply and stood along the primary entry road that leads to headquarters and the dam. Several decades ago, the groundskeepers announced plans to cut it down (strong young men with chainsaws see big trees as a challenge). Outrage and outcry kept the tree untouched, but it did eventually die = a full summer without a single leaf, so the grand old monarch was finally taken down.

Part of a tree in the dessert southwest, where there are generally two kinds of trees: 1) dead; 2) look like they should be dead.
