The arrangement of trees, exposure and colors of that image are just about perfect. A very difficult subject to make into an appealing image. Well done.
BTW: In my experience, the dynamic range of such a scene is enormous. Did you use HDR, adjust the shadows/highlights in PP, or was it a somewhat overcast day so the sunlit leaves were not impossibly bright?

thanks - appreciated - I was quite pleased by the way that little bit of woodland clicked together - all photography is visual editing of the world, but you need the scenes to be there to recognise! - Not HDR as such, but a fair amount of work with the 'basic' Lightroom sliders

Aha. I use LR sliders more than HDR, sometimes because I forget to engage HDR on the spot, sometimes because HDR may IMHO give an unnatural look to an image, producing a flat, pastel rendering that doesn't have the impact I felt when looking at the scene.

I went through and HDR phase - wouldn't touch it with a barge-pole now

One member of my local camera club is a believer () in HDR. Seems like every time he shows images, all are HDR and he gives a little promotional speech for using it (). I find many of his images flat, unnatural, wrong. OTOH, I have used HDR for some interiors, for example cathedrals where the brightness goes from impossibly dark to brilliantly illuminated stained glass, and sometimes the HDR captures what my rapidly adapting eyeballs saw. But I always take a "straight" shot that may look better using sliders.

You've probably, in reality, got the balance right there - I'm not relenting personally on HDR - partly because I've been scanning a lot of trannies of late and discovering again, that hey! - I like contrast! - but pragmatic common sense has never been a strong suit ;D
