Remnants of a birch. These trees go punky very quickly after they fall, but the bark persists like a shell.

Hattifnatt, the atmosphere of that second shot of the beech forest is absolutely exceptional.

Got down into the New Jersey pine barrens last weekend, and visited some swamps dominated by Atlantic White-Cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides). It is really an exceptionally aesthetically appealing species in its wild growth forms! These were developed in-camera since my laptop is in for repairs, so they don't look quite as I'd like, but nice nonetheless. Both with K-3 ii, first one with 18-55 kit lens and second with D-FA 100mm macro.
