I cropped down to a small part of the original image of this plant, which is big, because the red color is easier to appreciate. I think I knew the name on the day I took the picture, but after several years of not thinking about it.....sorry. Noelcmn probably knows.

Sometime when it was young this tree was bent over, but later it grew up straight. Kids obviously find the bent section irresistible for climbing, but the slightly tilted trunk in the distance still supports a healthy canopy.

Hemlock & pine grove, so shady and soil so acid that there is virtually no undergrowth.
