Another One Bites the Dust.

First my "magic Bird Tree" fell last winter, now this one.

I've known this tree, down on the trail, all my life: my parents and grandparents knew it, too. I ran past it 60 years ago, getting in shape for football.
When I took this photo, just about a year ago , I thought, "Actually, there's nothing holding it up!"

I guess it came to the same conclusion a week ago.

But I notice there are shoots coming off of those roots. I'm thinking they'll grow and, in 100 years, will replace what I've lost.
But no one then will know how old that tree really is.

It's sad when a grand old monarch of a tree goes down, especially one you've known for decades. The two images are fine, especially the first one with the dramatic light.

Alway hard to lose an old friend. What variety of tree was that, and any idea what may have caused it to become so hollowed out?
