Wonderful B&W! Pity the tree didn't live to see it.

Young honey locust tree, sporting a healthy growth of trunk thorns, thought to have made its species less inviting browse for Giant Ground Sloths during the a prehistoric age.

It looks like small branches are growing out of some of the nodes on those raised bulges that wrap around the trunks. Many trees don't produce new branches from mature trunks or boughs, but some do. The ones that do, probably do much less of this when they are surrounded by other trees, because those new little branches couldn't put many (or any) leaves in the sun. If the tree were in the open, or along a forest edge, new little branches like that could put some leaves in the sun. Being able to do that could be very beneficial to the tree. Do you know what species of tree it is? Do you recall seeing the shape of the leaves in the past.
Haven't been online for a while, but on closer inspection the tree is a mulberry, and I've noticed that other mulberries exhibit similar features. To me, the ridges appear to be for the purpose of increasing rigidity of the trunk. There is no indication of formation of adventitious buds emanating from them, nor does it appear to be encapsulation due to sapsucker damage. It's just an odd pattern I've not seen on other types of trees.

My mulberries don't have such neat ring-link structures, as that one, though they do tend to put out small branches from the sides of large limbs. Does it have white or red berries?

Wisteria (more a vine than a tree, but I don't want to start a vine thread!)

The immature berries are white on all three trees.

When I was a kid, we lived where there was a white mulberry tree in the yard for a few years, but I can't remember any details about the bark on the trunk. Our red mulberries here tend to be rather gnarly.

Trees grow up along fencelines, often with fencing becoming embedded in the trunks. If someone wants to remove the fence later, it is a bad idea to cut the fence wire too close to the tree. In that case the wire could eventually disappear into it, making a very serious hazard to someone who might later want to cut down the tree with a chainsaw. It is better to leave a long enough bit of the wire fencing sticking out on either side. Since that might be a hazard to a human, marking the wire in some way that makes it more visible is helpful.
You don't say?

Looking up, the wonderful Spring colors - pale yellow-green and deep red - really show against a clear blue sky.
