Those rows and groves of imported/invasive eucalyptus in CA are so beautiful. I was impressed by them when I first got to CA as a freshman. BUT, notice as with all stands of that alien plant where it grows in numbers, there is essentially nothing growing on the ground under them (a phenomenon called allelopathy). I eventually became aware that not only was the ground in the eucalyptus grove barren, but also there were no squirrels or birds in the canopy, and essentially no insects to be seen as well. It's a handsome tree, but in the USA it wants privacy.

Well, pinus radiata out here behaves similarly. Often planted as forestry plantations, local wildlife is not really at home in it and the needles smother the ground limiting native understory. Typical story of flora and fauna evolving together over Millenia and then humans relocate species to suite (typically) economic needs and the ecological balance is disturbed.

Transporting an organism to place where it never before existed, where the local flora & fauna have no experience with it, can have devastating consequences. Smallpox & several other European diseases spreading among the First Nations of NA (probably had more to do with the success of Europeans in NA than all of the latter's advanced weaponry); English sparrow & starling released into Central park NYC; and perhaps most notoriously, spectacularly and deep in modern memory, rabbits introduced to Australia.

It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature.

The startling and English sparrow might both be because someone, long ago, wanted to have all of the birds mentioned in Shakespeare living in New York City's Central Park.

And the gypsy moth was a consequence of someone trying to start a silk industry, but there was an accident with the cages, in Medford MA as I recall. Irony: SFAIK gypsy moth cocoons are not suitable for unraveling to make silk.

This is that bit of canal - more like a ditch - as you walk up river. Like the greens!

Don't know if this counts but it was the 'tunnel' of trees that caught my eye

That is a handsome tree, and it will be sorely missed when its time is done. My daughter lost a tree of that magnitude in her front yard during storm-generated winds recently, but its fall revealed it losing battle with age as the trunk snapped in half not far above the ground revealing a thoroughly rotten interior. She actually knew well beforehand that the tree's days were coming to an end.
