Gum tree (not sure which species) with stag horn fern growing on the trunk. The fern benefits, and so far as known the tree is neither harmed nor benefited. The fern spores are incredibly tiny, especially considering their growth potential, produced in prodigious quantities, and can lodge in the tiniest crevice or even just the surface moisture on the bark.

It's been out in the sun too long without enough Coppertone.
Ghost gum trees (Corymbia aparrerinja). These look a little like paper birch, but it isn't bark that gives the pale color. The bark peels off in strips annually exposing the pale outermost woody layer.

Makes no difference if you went looking for that lighting or it was fortuitous, the image is just gorgeous.

Scottish Savanna II

Shot facing the other way... from behind the split tree on the right, a while before the impending storm of the original shot.
