It doesn't exactly fall within the family of trees, but it was the only tall plant around.

It's a saguaro, found in the Sonoran Desert region of Arizona. This one was along a trail around the aptly named Saguaro Lake east of Phoenix. The tallest recorded one was around 73 feet tall.

Yep, and I believe it takes about 20 years before they start growing arms... I think.

I'll take your word for it, not many saguaros in this part of the country (south Florida). I think the big botanical garden has a special plot for desert plants, including some cacti. How they manage them during the wet season here, I have no idea. Special drainage, obviously, but what else, no clue.

Two flowering trees and a flowering bush. Many of the woody perennials are putting on a fine show this year, just loaded with blossoms after last year's exceptional drought.

I've admired this sycamore for decades, but never taken the trouble to get pictures of it. The symmetrical shape indicates it grew in isolation from competition by other trees since it was very small.
Of the four images, I like the third one best, taken with a fish-eye with as much distortion as possible removed from the bottom of the image to have a reasonably flat ground surface.

Ooh...a very handsome specimen indeed. What's the "fog" on the right, is that dust from the field being plowed? I see a tractor in one image.

Gorgeous, Walt! a month or so ago, we had a blooming of one of our (usually) most spectacular flowering trees, Tabebuia caraiba ("yellow tab"), but the bloom was shorter than usual and I never got any images <sigh>. The flowers are fragile and any breezy day will knock them down; we had a lot of really windy days, so the show was quite short this year. But I think I may have one or two in the archives (probably the Nikon library), I'll have to excavate.

It appears that the primary growth stem had been sheared off at some point in time, possibly from a storm, resulting in the two side branches assuming the task of continued vertical growth.
