Good image of the weather.
Unfortunately, that tree has since died and one of the mailboxes went missing. I was on that road not too long ago and stopped there for a view of the Rio Grand rift.

That's too bad; it really helped frame the shot. I have noticed similar changes at other locations where I wanted to try a repeat shot under different lighting conditions only to find the subject is no longer there.

It is a little sad but it underlines the uniqueness of most captures that were taken some time ago

It's poinciana season! Delonix regia, "royal poinciana", one of our most spectacular flowering trees. This is var. flavida, the yellow variety. Most have orange flowers, a few bloom in one or another shade of yellow. This one is probably the darkest yellow I have seen, there are others with lemon or butter yellow flowers, quite stunning! A very few bloom with red flowers...there's one down the street, I'll try to get an image of it.

The trees go dormant in dry season/winter, and usually drop all their leaves, bloom on bare stems a week or two after the first rains.

This is what happens when your houseplants grow up... Beaucarnea recurvata, commonly called "ponytail palm", although it is not a palm at all.

Two pages back (post #4782) I commented about the belief that the unusually large number of trees falling by natural causes over the past 18 months or so is a consequence of a cohort that was established after the great windfall caused by the '38 hurricane reaching a size where they are vulnerable to either breaking through the trunk or toppling down to their root because they've grown too tall, giving the wind more leverage than their trunks or roots can withstand.

In connection with that, this morning (Wednesday the 19th) we took a walk along an abandoned RRRoW that parallels the Swift River. Fallen trees have blocked the trail for many weeks over the past year, but the old rail bed is used by snowmobiles and we believe the club organizes chainsaw crews to periodically clear the trails they use of fallen trees. It will take two posts to show all the fallen trees we encountered along the one mile stretch that is now walkable. Beyond that, the snowmobiles don't go, and there are about six large trees down diagonally across the trail making passage impractical, far more effort than it's worth to get past that windfall.

Here is the first batch of images.

Here's the second batch of fallen tree images. I should point out that sometimes when a tree has toppled and ripped up its roots, when the trunk is cut by a chainsaw, the weight of the roots causes them to fall back more or less into place which brings the cut-off trunk upright. So some stumps look as though they were felled by a chainsaw, but not so.

And this is the end of the trail for us. A few of the trees in this fall have been cut, but most have not. They are lying roughly down the length of the RRRoW. Not only was it not worth the effort to climb over these, but when you're there, you can see yet another similar windfall a few hundred feet further along. We've been walking this trail for many years, and there have been more trees down in the past 18 months than in the previous decade, by a wide margin.
