Capturing a lightning bolt without an auto-triggering device is really tricky. MUCH easier at night. BTW, FYI the average duration of a single lightning bolt is about 0.2 seconds (TV = 1/5 second) which is just barely within human reaction time and shutter delay time (better to have the mirror up). A single strike is actually composed of over 50 discharges each of which lasts milliseconds and follow exactly the same path through the atmosphere ionized by the first extremely short discharge.
I've tried a few times to get decent photos of lightning, and it's certainly not easy. This one was pure luck, as I had my camera set up with an intervalometer to take a series of pictures for a timelapse. It was 1/15 second exposure, and I think I had it set for a shot every 3 or 5 seconds. I wasn't even there watching the camera when it happened, so I didn't even know I had captured it until I put the video together and watched it.

Serendipity is a very helpful accessory. Even better than a tripod.

<haha> I have no idea, either. The flowers remind me of one of our natives, "Geiger" (Cordia sebestena), with the bright orange flowers, but the leaves are all wrong for Geiger. There's a white-flowered species, Cordia boisseri, cleverly called "white Geiger", that's common in parts of Texas...maybe not DFW area, might be too cold for it there in winter. Whatever it is, it's really handsome, never mind the location

Extensive googling hasn't turned up an answer for me, either. Most of the orange trumpet blossoms I found are associated with a vine or shrub, not a tree. This one is in Camarillo, Calif.

If I were to guess it is Wianowłostka królewska (Delonix regia)? It can be bought as a seed here in Poland and is cultivated as bonsai. My father had a bonsai period at one point in his live.

Delonix regia is called royal poinciana here -- I posted several images of poincianas earlier in the thread. This tree is definitely not a poinciana. They are very common trees here in south Florida...there are dozens if not hundreds just in this neighborhood, including the two directly across the street from my house. They do bloom with mostly orange flowers, at this time of year, but Paul's image is something different. If I can figure it out, I'll post a note.

That said, they would make good bonsai, they have very tiny leaves. But they can get very, very large...a mature one is typically wider than it is tall, with a huge canopy. Gorgeous, very messy trees.

Here's that tree again from another angle - could it be a vine entangled in a tree?

Hm... based on the first image, I was just about to post another guess -- Punica granata, ornamental pomegranate -- but now, with a closer view of the actual flowers, maybe not. No, I don't think it's a vine, but that is certainly possible. Back to the (murky) crystal ball, I guess.
