I've posted other images of this beautiful old tree on this thread, and commented before that it has died probably because of repeated defoliation by gypsy moths. I'm very sad to see it go.

Amen to that. I planted one up on the hill behind the house a couple years back. It's been closer to normal moisture so far this year, following some unusually dry late Winter-Spring seasons, and the tree should be well established, so with luck it will have a rewarding bloom.

Some time back I posted other images of this tree that snapped a very large limb that crashed onto a RR shed. The RR people were very quick to cut off the sections that extended across the tracks. BTW: NECR is New England Central Railroad
