The image of the spider seems to have poor IQ, but it's a consequence of extremely shallow DOF. Photographed at 3X natural size or slightly more with no possibility of focus stacking because the spider was very much alive, moving voluntarily and also spinning on the thread on which it was suspended. I used a flash to stop the spider in motion as it twirled around, but sometimes it dropped down out of sight (tricky to get it back into the frame at this magnification) and sometimes it would climb out of sight. Taken in my "studio" as it is impossible to work outdoors at this magnification. I released the spider afterward.
The second image is some millimeter marks on a plastic ruler photographed at the same magnification. Resolution of scratches on the plastic demonstrate that the lens was sharp, but as the ruler was not perfectly parallel to the sensor, the scratches go in and out of focus across the image (out of focus on the left and bottom)
I would estimate the spider's body length - excluding legs - to be about 2mm.
