The black widow here has the hour glass shape but it is on the belly, not the back like yours. Here is a wiki article with a photo of one with the hour glass.

Wow Tim- the details on your spiders is amazing! TFS-always look forward to seeing your images. That green one with the reflections must be an all time high! Magnificent.
BTW- the one that you lost, and did'nt tell your wife-found it all the way here : Found it in the house, captured and put in my special yellow bowl-its too slippery for it to escape that way. My humble submission- though I guess I am crazy to be posting here-considering the high standards here.



This insect decided to join the fun and I hoped to see some action-but no luck. Guess they prefer to use their webs to do hunting for them. At one stage the insect climbed onto the spiders legs-to the consternation of the already stressed spider.






Saw thiis jumper at Pretoria National Botanical Gardens-it was jumping around (would'nt you if you saw an ugly mug like mine ) so difficult to get a good enough shot.
