Lol! For an ambush predator they are remarkably successful!

I'm amazed by how they take prey so much larger than themselves. They must have a good grip on their perch, and their prospective meals!

Thank you for looking! Yes, they box well above their weight, anchoring themselves with the rear pair of legs and gripping the prey with the two front pairs of legs which are considerably longer. Once the prey is gripped they inflict a poisonous bite as quickly as possible, usually on the prey's neck and then it's game over!

Nice catch! It seems that spiders have a cannibalistic streak. even eating their own kin.🤔😣

My favorite image of the pretty little meadow spider, although the lighting and background has almost obliterated the web (some of it does show at 100%). SCAN, so I don't know for sure what equipment I was using, but probably the 200mm f4.0 macro on my LX.

The first spider below is in Africa. I cropped off a lot of the legs to get into the body. I think it looks more sinister this way.
The second image is a SCAN of a type of spider I used to encounter regularly when turning over rotten wood or bark, but I haven't seen one for decades. The book characterizes it as a "relatively primitive" species.

Film Era spiders SCANS. They don't weave webs the way they used to. The first one was laying eggs.
