BUT! It is really a really well done image of spiders s--t. In fact probably the best image of spider s--t I've ever seen. Come to think more carefully, it's the only image of spider s--t I've ever seen. Kidding aside, it is a well executed deep macro stack.

BTW: SFAIK all female spiders wrap their eggs in "silk." I'm not sure if it's generally agreed for what original purpose spider silk evolved. The living "primitive" spiders use silk for egg cases, some to make a lining for their lair, some to leave behind a sort of "life line" (a spidery trail of bread crumbs) back to where they started out to hunt, but not necessarily to wrap up prey. The silky strands of these "primitive" spiders does not have the sticky glue that more "advanced" spiders use to trap prey. At least one expert on spiders has advanced the theory that silk originally evolved to protect reproductive products = eggs and spermatophores.

Haha, thank you

Very interesting facts!

And I think I managed to identify the species: it could have been a Cheiracanthium mildae, commonly known as northern yellow sac spider, but the name seems to be used for more species of the same genus Cheiracanthium.

"Common names" are useful, easier to remember, easier to inform someone else, often descriptive in a straightforward way. Unfortunately too many times one species of organism has multiple common names, and one common name may be used for multiple different species. Right now there are "asters" blooming all along the walks we take. Problem = there are at least 15 species of aster in MessyChewBits, possibly over 20 species. BUT, they all are called "aster" as that is also the scientific/generic name for almost al of them.

My favorite aster is the stiff sunflower not to be confused with the stiff aster!
Edit however Ionactis linariifolius is known as flaxseed white top aster, or stiff-leaved aster as well as stiff aster but never stiff sunflower as that is a different aster.

These are the last shots of our resident argiope before she left us. She moved from the porch to some jewel weed where I almost stepped on her!!!

Some old images of spiders that were probably posted years ago somewhere on PF, most likely on the Alphabet Race thread. Hopefully no one seeing them now will remember.

Found this spider (Wolf Spider?) upside down with legs curled, in typical dead spider pose. Did 500 image stack with Zerene after discards. A couple days later, the arachnid was gone. Upon review of the stack there were a pair of the legs that moved ever so slightly--once. Perhaps recovery from a partial paralysis delivered by a wasp, or a zombie parasite?

Slightly over 1.5x with Lawoa 100mm dreamer. Second image is actual pixel crop. It would appear that the "brushes" on the ends of the legs would allow for stealthy, low vibration walking or running. Posted earler to Macro.

Enviable macro work.
