Craters of the Moon, Idaho. The tourists give scale to this bleak, very rugged volcanic landscape.

I have probably posted a photo of this before, it is just a short hike from our house. I have decided to call this "Dragon's Backbone"

Second try. Cranked up the contrast quite a bit.

This spot takes a little explaining. The photos were taken inside a modest sized crater atop a small volcanic structure, perhaps and exposed plug or neck. There's one low spot around the rim of the crater. A family group of Viking settlers took refuge here, piling up boulders to make a wall that closed the gap in the crater wall, when they were attacked by other settlers, something that seemingly, according to the Icelandic sagas, took place fairly regularly. Except for a steep path that leads to the dip in the crater rim, climbing up, over and into the crater would be a challenge even if there were no one atop shooting arrows and heaving boulders down at you.

Perhaps more "blood" than bones of the Earth: Thousand Springs, Idaho, where ground water flowing through a porous layer encounters a cliff and spills out into the Snake River. Basaltic lava flows atop the cliff.

More volcanic terrain in Iceland. The basaltic lava here is pretty similar to Hawaiian lava, but it takes much longer to convert fresh flows into something that looks hospitable to humans. How on earth did the Viking settlers see this as more promising farmland than what they left behind?
