Another Academy picture. Conducting life raft drills from a Grumman HU-16 Albatross Sea Plane. They dropped us off in the Gulf with a half inflated raft and then took off. Thankfully, they returned a couple of hours later to pick us up.

With the new movie Ford Vs Ferrari, also known as Le Mans 66, coming out, I was going through my slides from the 1960s. I took these at the Nurburgring in June of 1966 just before the race at Le Mans. There were Ford GT40s and Ferraris but this race was won by Jim Hall's Chaparral. Pentax SV, Super Takumar 55mm f/1.8.

Epic shots. Always amazes me how modern the GT40 still looks. Just a shame that I'd be way too tall to get behind the wheel, even in the highly unlikely event that I ever did get the chance to drive one.

Just a fun Instamatic photo from my 1979 university days (daze?) as a distraction from the world outside today.

A Canadian stereo stand.

Here's a picture of the Lachine Maroons from the early '60s. My grandpa was coach, he's on the left and my dad is in the middle with the winter hat.

Uncovering a sedimentary layer of 1980's Polaroids in my current round of photo sorting. This one could fall under a few different themes here in the forums.

Yours truly reading the instructions while opening the M28 2.8 that I had just purchased in August of 1982. Image shot by my wife in a Westmount, Montreal apartment we were borrowing from a family friend while on our honeymoon.

Lighthouse Keeper

Every time I see a lighthouse... I always think of this wee song passed down Father to young Sons. Started off by my Great Grandfather, who was the Captain on the Nore Lightship (Trinity House LV86), now moored and displayed at St Katharine Docks, London.

"I'm a Lighthouse Keeper and it gives me great delight,
To see that the Lighthouse light shines bright,
And for every night the light shines bright,
It was me that made the light shine bright"

Sorry... just a wee bit of child hood memories.

P.S. I've just located my Great Grandfathers picture from back in the day, so added it on to this post.

This was the biggest fish I saw come out of the pond at the private estate where I worked in the 1980s. My supervisor called me to say that my friend and co-worker Clint had caught a big bass, and I ran down with my SP1000 and SMC Takumar 55mm f/2 to get the picture. I hooked one like this once when I was fishing poppers for bream, but it gave one twitch and broke my leader.

Interesting spot the differences exercise - The main building has been extended but original style has been retained - do ou know what the purpose for the structure is on the right? Sheltered kitchen gardens for the light house keepers?

No lighthouse on this headland, although there is a coastwatch lookout, on the seaward side. Apparently the chimney atop the hill related to a mine on the site and even when a replacement chimney was built lower down, the original was retained as a landmark to aid navigation. In 1987, the H. J. Heinz Company bought and donated the site to the nation. It is currently managed by the National Trust.

Most lighhouses now are unmanned and automatic, I think. I don't know that there is any specific purpose for the sheltered terraces, but I presume the greenhouse performs the normal function of protecting plants - as much as anything I would guess from wind driven salt spray at such an exposed location.

Lydham Manor leaving Kingswear for Paignton on the Torbay Steam Railway, South Devon - a 1970s(1974 I believe) view scanned from slide film. An SPII was my main camera at the time.
