can't blame me though, it's one lens I thought about buying a year ago, would be nice to test one before making a costly decision, eh!

I promise I'll get to commenting tonight or this weekend. Been nutty busy!

I got my first shoot with a local weekly cycling magazine this weekend! I can't wait.

FEBRUARY THEME ?? Discussion requested.

Hi everyone. I know we're only just over half way through January but I'm going to be traveling late January/early February and that means I'll probably post the new month's threads a bit earlier than usual.

The issue for which I seek discussion is the nature of the theme for February. It has already been suggested that it be images using a fisheye lens. This immediately attracted some support, but it also prompted awareness that many members do not have such lenses. Now while I believe firmly that no theme should be obligatory, I just wonder if the fisheye suggestion might lead to a lower participation rate because too many members will feel excluded because they don't have access to a "suitable" lens. It's quite different to nominating say "yellow" or "bokeh" as a theme - everyone has the capacity to contribute to those sort of themes if they choose to do so.

I have done two months before using the DA 10-17mm "fisheye" and during that time I posted quite a few images that were closer to the 17mm end. So I'm just wondering would it be more inclusive to suggest a theme of say "pictures using a focal length of x mm or less", in which case, what is the preferred value of x?

Please post your thoughts/suggestions on this during the next week or so; I'm keen that as many people as possible can participate as fully as possible.

Thanks. Rod

Wow that should keep us going until after 2024. There are some great themes in this list. I think that themes are more inclusive than focal lengths. Part of the reason why this challenge is so compelling is that it gives people the motivation to try out a *new* lens they have just got, or one they don't use very much, and share their photos with others...If someone said "only use a certain focal length" etc. that could reduce participation IMO.

I also have a bee in my bonnet with fisheye and wide-angle lens perspectives on crop-sensors. I inherited a Takumar 24mm some time ago and its called an "extreme wide-angle" in lens reviews. But its nothing like that on a crop sensor, and the results don't look very "wide-angle" let alone fisheye. And 17mm crop is hardly fisheye. So my vote goes to sticking to the current format and selecting our own personal themes if we need inspiration. Having said that, the bokeh month was fun!!

Now go on; get all of them in one photo

I'm lens-challenged, and presently can't go shorter than 28 mm or longer than 50mm (my Tokina tele zoom is pretty dodge), so almost any focal-length based theme would be impossible for me.

A (flexible) subject theme is all good.

More thoughts …… the lens has to be the underpinning element of this challenge - that’s what sets this game apart from all the other themed games/challenges elsewhere in the Forum.

Suggestion … could February be “your shortest/widest lens”, whatever that may be? That would bring in those with fisheyes, but everybody, without exception, has a shortest lens in their kit, and would be able to participate. Those that wanted to go further and combine that with their own sub-theme (colour/lines/shapes/subjects etc) could still do so.

Come in Tim, and others .....

I like this as an idea. I was thinking about using my new lens but I can use my FE for Feb. I doubt I'll get out very much since my health took a nose dive, but I'd like to try to get back in the game.

Shortest/widest works for me although this would leave me to decide between my Pentax M 28mm f2.8 or my Pentax D AL 18-55 kit lens trying to restrict the latter to its shortest focal length - of which my choice would be the former since mmost my my photography has been with the kit. And individual sub-themes I can live with.

How about a simple, easy, all encompassing theme: "My neighbourhood through just one lens" (maybe "My home town...")

I'm sure everyone could do this.

Still not sure about the theme, I might not join the theme because I'd rather try my new DA35 lens to get familiar with it.
Bought it for the coming trip to Iran this April so it's better to get to know it. :-)
Hmm, but I can leave it for March and join the wide angle theme with DA21.
