Funny how a thread disappears from our radar when there aren't any new posts. I would like to show two ends of the scale in this country, the first building is still in use, in fact its $1 billion dollar renovation (which to be fair includes the East and West blocks -this picture is just of the Centre Block- along with other facilities and features on Parliament Hill) isn't complete yet. The second building went out of service in 1956, which explains why the Union Jack is flying along with the Canadian flag that didn't become official until 1965.

#1: United Nations HQ, NYC, NY. It's the wide building near the left side, as well as the low white extension and low dome. Arguably not a "government" but certainly not privately owned.

#2: Federal Courthouse, Islip, NY.

#3: Cultural Education Center, Albany, NY. It houses NY State government offices, a museum, and a research library.

Orpheum Theatre

The Orpheum Theatre, built in 1929, was purchased by the City of Phoenix in 1984 and underwent a 12 year restoration. Towering behind it is the Phoenix City Hall. In the background, on the right side of the image is the Phoenix Municipal Court Building. On the left side of the image, the top of the Maricopa County Court Complex is visible.

Magistrate's courts, Port Elizabeth, at which place I appeared at the tender age of 16, and that during the 1976 Soweto uprising. Our high school "sympathised" with the rest of the tumultuous country at the time, in which we refused to attend class, and gathered en mass on the school premises. In no time we were surrounded by Security Police, bundled into vehicles and jail, and released to the care of our parents, and had to appear a few days later. We were acquitted!

Public Buildings of Florida and Georgia

I think photography can be an art form and it can also be a documentation tool. This post leans more toward documentation.

First up is a rest area on Interstate 75 northbound just south of Gainesville, FL. The state is economically diversified and prosperous, and takes good care of its tourists.

My 20-something daughter used to watch an inane comic called "The Squidbillies" which was set in "deepest butt-crack Georgia". Once when we crossed from a particularly ravaged part of South Carolina (Allendale County) into a particularly desolate part of Georgia (Screven County), she asked if we were in "deepest butt-crack Georgia". I told her that was an accurate description of all of Georgia, except for a few locations around Atlanta, Athens and Savannah. No offense to any Georgians or South Carolinians. They are both beautiful states with friendly, decent people, plus the fishing and hunting are probably superb.

Here we have the Post Office for the unincorporated community of West Green, GA. What it lacks in grandeur is more than made up for by the nice paint job and tidy lawn.

Next up is the Uvalda, GA Police Department. I don't quite know what to think. Surely the old Chevy is not the squad car?

Finally, the City Hall of Bartow, GA. Yes, that's a Little Free Library out front.

The interior of the former US post office in Reno, Nevada. Designed by Frederick DeLongchamps in 1932 in the Zig Zag Moderne style of Art Deco. The post office was closed in 2012 and is now an 'urban marketplace'.
