Assignment: Blow It!

Mike Johnston of The Online Photographer had an excellent post/challenge yesterday:

So...have you ever taken a picture that had a significant area of blown highlights, or, better yet, flared highlights? I'd like to see some.
So, how about it? Show us your shots where you broke the rule "don't blow out the highlights" and won!

Here's mine to get started:

I see accent whites not blown highlights in that shot. The difference being small areas of out of gamut are really insignificant and can accent a shot as apposed to the major sections that contribute in a significant way are blown.

Critics so soon! The clouds and edge of the Sun top centre are blown. Not a huge area, but I was going for this particular component of Mike's challenge:

Not good enough?! Let's see yours and others.

So I blew it at blowing it!

Not surprised, my wife says I'm too much of a rule-follower.

Thanks for showing us how it's done, Crooski!

I'm looking forward to more from the rule-breakers to inspire us rule-followers. More blow-outs and flares, please!

Well I blew it big time here...nothing in focus, with a giant blob of white. Thanks to the OP for starting this fun thread!

Problem here is all the really bad ones of mine are trashed already.other than that I would have had plenty to contribute.

You are welcome. I'm hoping to see some really interesting photos that I would not have considered trying/keeping.

I let the overcast sky blow out this past weekend. Felt good.

Me too, I was quick to trash most things that touched the right side of the histogram. Now I'm liberated!

But still, I'd like to see photos that use the blow-outs and flares; those that are better, rather than worse, for them.

Great idea for a thread, and what a great picture to start it off with, even if some people don't think you blew it enough. Great stuff from everyone else, too.

This picture was kind of an accident. My camera tends to underexpose with the Super-Tak 50, so I always put in + exposure comp to fix it. One time, I put in way too much, and the pictures came out like this:

I kind of like the effect, though. It's like she's walking on sunshine.

Agreed, I like it too! I seem to gravitate towards slight underexposure in my PP. Maybe I should try going brighter than I'm usually comfortable with for a while.
