@UncleVanya: Howdy! I think he's using telescope numbers. 66mm aperture at 400mm focal length (f6) and the ED coating handles color better than standard achromat refractors. I'd like more info too as I'm possibly shopping for an ed or apo in the next year.

That's a lovely eclipse shot. Mine were in high winds and a bit of a mess. I'm still playing with them though. Because of the high winds I used a short and light(and old) 100mm f6 (600mm) Orion scope and my k5. On the big ole EQ6-R mount to anchor things.

Here's my timelapse of the event. The shadows are mostly smoke from the fire that was required due to the negative wind chill that night. It was a great show though! After replacing my beleaguered k-50 for xmas, I'm still learning the k5's quirks as an astrophotography camera so there are obvious errors here. I lost much of the the second half after the camera refused to respond to the remote(indoors) system upon return to internal exposure timing.
Maybe I'll find a good one to put in this lunatic thread.

Lunar eclipse fun

cheers!

Still testing a new lens, so I went out this morning to "shoot the moon". That didn't work very well - kept the shutter open too long, I think - but I got this nice picture of some walnut branches (or twigs).

Use 1/ISO @ f/16 and at f/8. The moon is in bright sunlight. Sometimes you need the extra stop at f/8 because of atmospheric conditions.

Once again it was too cloudy last night for the day before full moon shot (my usual shooting window) and it's not looking promising tonight either.
But the skiing is great and we desperately need to fill our reservoirs so I'm not going to complain about precipitation!

I do like the look of your picture though. I think the long exposure gives those twigs a horror movie effect. I can hear the werewolves howling in the distance.

"Moon over Gilroy, CA" (the garlic capital of the world). We've had rain on and off for two weeks all over the state, so I had to shoot this while on a mini vacation :-)

I just use those two stops, yes. For haze I only open one stop or the haze seems to take over.

No I mean that f8 to f16 is two, not 1 stop of exposure. Unlike shutter speeds f stops that are double are two stops different. Your post seemed to suggest there was only 1 stop between them.

I skied a couple of miles with a backpack full of gear to a spot that was going to line up some interesting rocks with the moonrise that looked like it might be saved by clearing skies after a snowy day. But that plan didn't work out with a low bank of clouds on the eastern horizon. It also got cold. Really cold and windy. So I skied back to the car and started driving home and boom the moon appears so I scrambled to get it with these trees on our nearby mountain.
Not what I had planned but I was happy to not come home empty handed tonight.

K-3 with Pentax 300mm F4 + K T6-2X teleconverter.
F11, 1/180, 400 iso
Raw processed with Affinity Photo

Tried a new combination last night shooting the Supermoon with a (new to me) MF Pentax 300 and teleconverter. I was pleasantly surprised. There is very little fringing, which is frequently a problem for me shooting long with these old film era lenses.

I shot RAW and aggressively sharpened to try to bring out the relief in the craters along the edge.

OOPS! Huge typo. Somewhere in my head f/11 migrated to f/16. I use f/8 and f/11.
