. That said, I'm confident the aligning engine in Autostakkert will blow it out of the water when it comes to warping/skewing an image locally for the specific case of correcting atmospheric distortion. I understand my image falls a long way short of demonstrating this, but that is a limitation on the optics rather than the stacking accuracy.
I've had better luck stacking in Hugin with moon shots than with Autostakkert with marginal images, specifically my eclipse images from a few years back. Autostakkert just didn't know what to do but Hugin happily consumed and got things sorted out. It may have been that I didn't have a a tracking mount and was really pushing the exposure time and ISO to get something so I had to reframe every handful of shots.

When I get some time I will go and play with reprocessing my 800mm moon shots to see what I can get.

One thing concerns me. Using a large number of shots to stack a moon image (like 1000) is using a significant chunk of my expected shutter life.
Whilst I am all for quality, a single exposure isn't that bad (KP, 50-300 PLM @ 300 Raw with a bit of sharpening and a hefty crop).

I may try half a dozen at some stage but more than that, I don't think is going to happen.

Don't worry about it. MTBF is just that an average time before failure. Your shutter could fail tomorrow after the next click, or it could last another 10 years and 1,000,000 shots. I bought my cameras to use them and they see lots of use. In a given night of astro shooting it isn't uncommon for me to be running 3 cameras and take 500-600 shots with each of them. I will do this as much as life and weather permit so typically 1 to 10 times a month. If I go after the moon on some nights then it will be close to 1000 shots each night where I am chasing it because a moon shot only takes a fraction of a second instead of 20-30s for other astro shots.

Don't forget your KP has an electronic shutter mode.

That is what I used for the 1200 frames for the photo I posted. I used it to minimise vibrations, but it also avoids any wear on the shutter.

I freaked out my friends on Facebook with this picture of the Full Pink Super Moon (at least until they read the caption where I stated that I added the pinkish color in Photoshop).

That’s cruel... nobody bothers to read the details on social media - don’t you know that? The headline is all people need to completely understand things... lol.
