The woman on the left produced a Nikon DSLR from her bag, and took a few shots.

The guy with the fast frame rate camera.....

Anyone that has used one of those monopods - are they functional or get in the way?

Functional, but, leave shake reduction on, and occasionally, I can't stabilize the camera enough even with the monopod. My favourite is one I got from Lee Valley Tools, that functions as a hiking stick until you need it as a monopod.

You can also turn a monopod with a tripod head on it into a selfie stick using the Pentax remote as a trigger.

Although looking at the date of this post, I can safely say the idea never really took off.

This is worth a look. Thanks for the input.

I have one of the Lee Valley hiking sticks too and it works great both as a hiking stick and as a monopod. It extends much higher than most regular monopods so less bending to see through the viewfinder but is sturdy enough to support my K-70 and 55-300 PLM plus a swivel head and quick release system.

This is the one we both use: Telescoping Hiking Stick - Lee Valley Tools

That's the one. What kind of swivel head do you have on it?

I have the Vanguard PH-10 swivel head but I believe it has now been discontinued which is a great pity as it was a really well built head that was super strong and smooth in operation without being too heavy.

I paired that up with an Oben QRA-R2 quick-release system which is very compact and lightweight. I bought two of the QR systems and have the other mounted on my Vanguard tripod so that I can use either my monopod or my tripod with the same QR plate on my camera.

Here is one I got this last Saturday night. I was photographing a local bar band and this guy started to do video with his phone.
