Female Galah. KP + DA 55-300 PLM at 135mm.

Yesterday, I heard the flock of galahs that visit regularly squawking loudly outside our kitchen. Opened the door and saw a large raptor less than 2 metres away attacking a galah on the ground, right below the kitchen window. When the raptor saw me it let go of the galah and flew off. The lucky galah flew off in the opposite direction. There were feathers on the ground but I didn't see any blood on the ground or as the bird flew away.

I tried to work out what the raptor was. It was dark brown (no stripes or striations like a goshawk or sparrowhawk) and had a head like an eagle (not a falcon), but wasn't a Wedge-tailed Eagle (which are huge). I figured it was probably a Little Eagle, although I have only previously seen them at a distance.

When I looked out this morning there was a fresh pile of pink and grey (galah) feathers. Through the trees I saw a large brown bird which seemed to be struggling to carry something. .... So I guess the eagle got its galah in the end (whether the same one or not I don't know).

It was an amazing sight. Nature red in tooth and claw, as Tennyson said.

distance

Most of my bird shots, especially the ones of warblers, are taken at about 10 meters. Sometimes a wee bit closer or farther. Here are examples of where distance, or proximity really makes a difference.
First shot is a Great Crested Flycatcher taken at roughly 80 meters.
Second shot is the Eastern Kingbird taken at about 20 meters. With the DA 1.4 TC mounted.
Third shot a house wren taken at 8 meters. All my bird photos are hand held with the DFA 150-450 lens. On days when the light is good I will add the 1.4 tele converter. Some day I hope to obtain the DA 55-300 to give my old arms a rest. For many shots I believe it would do as well as the beast.
Best Regards, Bob

Taken on practice day for the OC Air Show. The local yard birds were not too happy with the noise and shock waves. I can only imagine she was thinking - Those planes are making too much noise…making me grumpy.

Territorial dispute:

The Cormorant withdrew. The Heron went on to attack another heron.
