It's a Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis), also called Indian Myna. They are not native to Australia. They were introduced to Australia from India in the 1860s and have become a terrible pest and a major threat to native species (they drive out native species from nesting and feeding sites).

I like the photo but I hate the bird!
In my part of the world (Southern Ontario, Canada) the introduced intruders are European Starlings and House Sparrows. I've never seen a Bluebird: I believe the House Sparrows are responsible for their decline.

We have them too (starlings are blight for farmers and orchardists and sparrows eat grain), but Mynas are even worse. It would probably take a "gene drive" to get rid of these pests - and of course that brings its own bundle of issues.

I'm reminded of something I came across in a book on the environment: "You can never do just one thing." Everything has unexpected ramifications and unintended cosequences. The "side effects" of a drug are just other things a drug does. That they're unwanted results is immaterial: the drug still produces them.

This is a bird I would love to see - and to hear their famous haunting night-call. Fine shots and thanks for sharing.

Deliberate introductions of species from other continents must be amongst the worst examples of human hubris. But an ill-considered gene drive could be another.
