It's a nice looking bird, and seems to show often at dusk or during overcast weather, like the red cardinals.

Bruant fauve / Fox Sparrow [Passerella iliaca]
Handsome little fellow/lady. As our lawn is still suffering from the annual white disease, we haven't seen many birds yet.

This White-headed Pigeon turned up at our place on New Year's Day, stayed the night and then disappeared. They live in the warm temperate forests and north to the tropics of eastern Australia and are rare visitors to our cooler climate in South Gippsland (southernmost part of the Australian mainland). One also stopped over for a day or so last summer - perhaps a sign of climate change that they are coming this far south? Morecombe (Field Guide to Australian Birds) describes them as "one of the shiest and wariest of pigeons", so a joy to get some clear shots of this big handsome fellow.

First shot KP + FA*300; other two KP + DA 55-300 PLM.

OK Marcos, how did you catch me in my yard before my second cup of coffee? Sheesh, there is no privacy anymore...
Cute shot,
Eric

Terrific shots Rod. Beautiful birds, the King Parrots. Wouldn't expect to see them much inland of the Great Divide?

We do get a number here.
These ones were at Bright last week.
The house we stayed in was halfway up a steep hill and these fellows were feeding in a Japanese Maple at about my head height, standing on the balcony. Probably less than 2 metres from me.

Sounds like they are very used to people too! The ones that visit here are quite bold (having identified us as seed-providers!).

Grey Fantail in the morning light. KP + FA*300mm f4.5
