Several day ago I was sitting and reading when a flash of motion caught my eye. a Cooper's hawk had taken a mourning dove just outside the patio door.

On a less violent note there's been a downy woodpecker

a couple of red breasted nuthatches

a few mountain chickadees

and a Costa's hummingbird visiting the feeders over the last couple of days.

the mice and juncos are contending over grain spillage near this rotting tie wall
real fights...totally unexpected considering the difference in sizes

my desire for a shot was interrupted by a cooper's that actually dragged a mouse from the wall a couple of days ago

no visible rodents since

Northern harrier; I rarely see them landed, usually they are coursing the fields for prey

I'm cheating a little bit here - this Painted Bunting was in the "yard" at the Visitor Centre of the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Florida. I thought something colourful might be appropriate today. Now I'm back in Toronto and I have to go out and clear some snow. Best of the season to everyone!

A sparrow puffed up and trying to stay warm. Not much protection from the wind in the Pussy-willow bush.

Summer is parrot season. New this year are Little Corellas - another of the cockatoos that have spread in range and number over recent years. They weren't in Gippsland at all until about 30 years ago, but they have now become quite common. Beautiful birds - playful, lively, social and smart.

These with the DA-L 55-300.

I assume that their scientific name, Cacatua sanguinea (blood-coloured cockatoo), refers to the red patch on their lores.

I finally got some "yard" time today. It was late, the light was very soft, but I guess you take what you get.

K-3 and Tamron SP AF 300 2.8 ED [IF] and HD DA 1.4 TC (420mm ƒ4)

A downy woodprecker,

A Hairy Woodpecker, he didn't fit the frame but he graciously turned sideways ro I didn't have to go vertical/

An American tree sparrow. I have no idea what this guy is doing here this time of year. The Juncos as well have stayed really late. Nether usually turn up until spring. It hasn't been a warm year, so I'm not sure what's up.

The aforementioned Junco
