What a great run of photos! A White-breasted nuthatch on a feeder. They are the most vocal of the birds that visit this feeder, and are always entertaining. I took this with the K-3 and a 55-300mm lens.

The Yard Bird Murder

I stepped out on the porch just now and found this not far from the feeder:

The cats have alibis--they were indoors as usual.

So I strongly suspect an avian perp. This guy has been seen in the area recently.

I'd like to bring him in for questioning.

Nice shot of the nuthatch. And like you say, they are always entertaining..them and the chickadees are forever talking to me when I am out in the yard. Some of the other birds scold me but these guys are so friendly, often only a couple of feet away from me and just going about their thing.
Best Regards, Bob

My small birds were absent as were the squirrels yesterday due to this guy having lunch on top of the feeder post's bird house.

A Merlin was on my feeder the other day. The Redpolls never came back.

I don't mind them eating snakes but this wasn't a bad snake, it's a Glass snake and non poisonous. Their diet consists of lizards and spiders, and other small critters. What I don't like is when they go after the Tit Mouses. For some reason they seem to like to dine on them, more than any other bird that visits my backyard.

I have no idea what our guy eats, I've seen him fly through the yard many times, but I've never seen him catch anything or even eating anything. But, there are couple of Merlin chicks raised within earshot every year.

I've found Tit Mouse feathers on the ground after one of these hawks have been in the yard, is the only way I knew what they prefer. My pair I have here even use the birdbath for drinking and bathing. They nest a tall pine tree just behind a neighbors house.

The current migration inhabitants, over 100 Grackles and Redwinged Blackbirds ( and maybe a Starling or two.) Count them if you don't believe me. I could have gone outside but I took it through the porch door.

I saw this tiny bird flashing round this morning while I was hoping for a squirrel or two.
Not a good image, it had clouded over, the bird was in some shade and this was the only reasonable image I managed in the few seconds it was in the garden.
Heavily cropped (well it is the smallest British bird, Goldcrest).
