Are you sure the second one isn't a female American Goldfinch.

I have to go a lot further than my yard to get shots like that!
You need a bigger yard.

Soon as my brat brother picks up the leaves in the back yard I can feed the birds and squirrels again. His mower picks up the bread and food I put out, so there is no reason to feed until after he gets done getting the leaves up.

We've been raking our acre. We both have repetitive strain injuries from doing so. One acre of backyard forest can produce a surprising number of leaves.

In my neighbor's yard, deep in the forest shadows on the west slope of the hill on a gloomy morning. But a rare chance to get a couple of hawks in the same frame. I think the one on the left is a juvenile--unsure about the other. In any case, I assume they're related.

Brush Turkey. They build a huge earth mound, and keep their eggs at the correct temperature by varying the thickness. When the chick hatch, they will be on their own without parents to guide them.

That's what I'd like to see walking in my yard! Nice capture, Arnold.

Thank you Norm for questioning that, but I am certain it is a female oriole. Actually I have a bunch more shots of them and a couple fair shots of the female finch. The finch have moved on, my summer resident ones have not arrived yet. Also, the silly evening grosbeaks are still here. Have 6 pairs and they seem content being around the rose-breasted grosbeaks. I would think that it is nesting time. Perhaps I will get some cross breads...

Thank you. Quite a few of these Brush Turkeys wander through our yard. They can make a mess of your garden. They are very good flyers also. It amazes me that the babies hatch with all they need for survival already pre-programmed in their heads. We humans are helpless for years. I also notice that the more intelligent birds are born helpless as well, needing care and nurture.

Here's one for mothers day:

Olive backed sunbird on nest in our garden gazebo - nest is built new each year using bark twigs and spider web, this year incorporating dog hair from the neighbour's dog. The eave over the entrance is always a distinctive feature.

Awesome photo and explanation. You are lucky to have such a cool gazebo guest.
