Best Regards, Bob
They make an impressive sight, wings spread, sunning themselves in the morning.

Did he go for your throat?

Shouldn't Orlando be venomous or something? Isn't Australia the land of sabretooth hummingbirds and poisonous bilbies, where if the wildlife isn't actively trying to kill you, it's only because it's asleep and dreaming of killing you?

Just between ourselves, we put those stories around to keep the number of tourists under control. Are Australian snakes the deadliest in the world? Not even close

Orlando was more likely to sit on my knee than go for my throat.

The dear chap died last year from a respiratory infection. Miss him a lot.

They have nested in our shed each year for 6 years Dave. Each year the chicks have departed (eventually). They are not like maggies or fairy-wrens whose chicks from previous broods stay around and help with raising the youngsters. Essentially there is a pair with a territory. They tolerate others until breeding season. The resident pair does all the work in raising their chicks.

A couple of years ago one of the boys from a previous brood returned and challenged Orlando for the territory. He nearly won. This year, following the deaths of the parents, we have previous years' female chicks looking to take over the territory, each with a bloke from elsewhere. They don't seem interested in nesting in the shed, so they will probably build new nests.

They are fascinating birds. Their song is remarkable and a delight to hear.
