I was walking to Union Station in Washington DC with a co-worker, and approaching from the rear of the facility, I commented on all the graffiti that had been applied to the big concrete walls. My co-worker chided me for my disapproving comments, saying I should be more liberal, and that I did not properly appreciate what he called, "native art".
I wonder which, if any, of those images had been filed with the Register of Copyrights at the Library of Congress?
There is line that should be sharp but is sometimes blurred that separates "street art" from "graffiti" or what I might call "spray paint vandalism." I have been impressed by the quality and creativity of the "street art" that noelcmn has found in South Africa. Almost all of what I see locally or riding in a train here in the USA is just the work of idle punks trying to get themselves noticed. I had a colleague call it "self expression.' I walked away and at least in my mind, retched.
