Green flashes at sunset

"Green Flash" - taken at Poldhu Cove, Cornwall. We often used to spend holiday evenings on Porthmeor Beach, St. Ives with a friend, Ron Sutherland, garden photographer, no longer with us. He often spoke about the green flash as the sun dropped below the horizon. I had almost given up ever seeing one, let alone managing an image. That all changed on Poldhu Cove, and I could hardly believe I was witnessing the green flash and even managed a quick photo. This image is a centre crop.

After years of waiting to see a green flash, just over 3 months later, this happened:-

Going out to a beach or mountain for a sunset is nice but most of the time is spent at work and this is the sunsets we get...

Interesting phenomenon! I haven't seen enough sunsets over the ocean to have seen this myself (since I live on an eastern coast). Thanks for posting!

Thank you. I understand that the same thing can occur at sunrise but I could imagine it being harder to spot. Also, the first of the two shots was taken from Poldhu Cove looking across Mount's Bay - in effect, towards Land's End - but the flash shows above the low hills, not above water, so an ocean view would not appear to be a necessity. I think that's why I was surprised to see the flash and did a "double take" before pressing the shutter, and thought I might have missed it.

Glad you caught it! I'm not a morning person, so I won't promise to try to catch the green flash at dawn.

I don't do sunrises, can't get up early enough, although I admire the work of those who do.
