Sunset at Sennen, Cornwall

An enlargement of the horizon at sunset showing the flash of colour that sometimes occurs as the top of the sun tips below the horizon. Due to refraction of the light through the earth's atmosphere this can result in flashes of yellow, less often green, and sometimes blue. In this case the left hand end of the flash is a green/blue. Actually the air quality is excellent unless you're in the stratosphere (possibly higher). The colour in the sky long after the actual sunset is caused by the volcanic eruption in Tonga months ago, which blasted material into the upper atmosphere.

There was a similar effect years ago after Mount Pinatubo erupted.
